I joined the Board of Directors in 2009 as the chair of alumni events. In 2010 I took office and have increased our annual events from 2 to 20+ events per year in an effort to galvanize our alumni community. Over the course of the last year we have had 10 alumni national meet-ups and an international meet-up in Beijing, China. To create more connections back to the Penn community we have also hosted 6 online networking events for alumni to connect GSE students and other alumni from across the country.
In 2010 I was specifically focused on student engagement. To engage more students we created communication pathways with each division administrator and reviewed the communication plan for GSE in relation to their online blast, Facebook page and Penn website. In a need for students to understand the experiences of an education professional we created the “trials and tribulations” series where professors and alumni partake in an online WebEx and tell candid stories of their experiences in the field. As a board we also supported the recently launched mentoring program where 80 alumni mentored 115+ current graduate students.
Moving into this year my focus has been on systemic change. I work with the Vice President of Admissions and the Dean’s office to align our goals with the overall Penn GSE mission and vision. Our goal for the coming year is to be able to catalog more alumni stories and build a strong sense of community within the GSE alumni population. We have restructured the awards and nominations committed and enhanced the historical committee. We have also built a volunteer communications team to support the GSE staff in communicating alumni stories and successes.
As a member of the University of Pennsylvania Professional School Board I work to connect with the multicultural groups and other professional alumni networks to plan events, build inter-disciplinary networks and share best practices. As the GSE Alumni Board of Directors becomes more organized and visible we hope to begin creating concrete job pathways that support Penn GSE objectives and our rising alumni.
